What is the difference between the three concepts of bolts, screws, and screws?

In life, bolts, screws, screws, etc. are often mentioned, so what is the difference between them? In fact, the standard saying is that there are no screws and nuts. Screws are a common name, and those with external threads can be called "screws". The shape of the nut is usually hexagonal, and the inner hole is an internal thread, which is used to cooperate with the bolt and tighten the related parts. Nut is a common name, and the standard should be called "nut".

The head of the bolt is generally hexagonal, and the shank has an external thread. The screw is small, the head has a flat head, a cross head, etc., and the shank has an external thread. Studs should actually be called "double-ended studs". Both ends have external threads, and the middle is usually a polished rod. The long end of the thread is used to connect with the deep hole, and the short end is connected with the nut.

Standard fasteners are divided into twelve categories, and the selection is determined according to the use occasions and functions of the fasteners.

1. Bolt

Bolts are widely used in mechanical manufacturing for detachable connections, and are generally used in conjunction with nuts (usually plus a washer or two washers).

2. Nut

3. Screws

Screws are usually used alone (sometimes with washers), generally for fastening or tightening, and should be screwed into the internal thread of the body.

4. Stud

Studs are mostly used to connect one of the parts to be connected with a large thickness, and it is necessary to use a place with a compact structure or where bolt connection is not suitable due to frequent disassembly. Studs are generally threaded at both ends (single-headed studs are threaded at one end). Usually, one end of the thread is firmly screwed into the body of the component, and the other end matches the nut for connection and fastening. It also has a fixed distance effect to a large extent.

5. Wood screws

Wood screws are used to screw into wood for joining or fastening.

6. Self-tapping screws

The working screw hole matched with the self-tapping screw does not need to be pre-tapped, and the internal thread is formed when the self-tapping screw is screwed in.

7. Gasket

Lock washer

Washers are used between the supporting surface of bolts, screws, nuts, etc. and the supporting surface of the workpiece to prevent loosening and reduce the stress on the supporting surface.

8. Retaining ring

The retaining ring is mainly used to position, lock or stop the part on the shaft or in the hole.

9. Pin

Pins are often used for positioning, but also for connecting or locking parts, and as overload shearing elements in safety devices.

10. Rivets

A rivet has a head at one end and an unthreaded shank. When in use, the rod is inserted into the hole of the connected piece, and then the end of the rod is riveted to play a role of connection or fastening.

11. Connection pair

A connection pair is a combination of screws or bolts or self-tapping screws and washers. After the washer is installed on the screw, it must be able to rotate freely on the screw (or bolt) without falling off. It mainly plays the role of fastening or tightening.
